What Is the PM Surya Ghar Scheme?

Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to support rooftop solar installations for one crore households across India. The scheme provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to eligible residential consumers who install qualifying grid-connected rooftop solar systems through the prescribed process.

With rooftop solar, your home can generate electricity from sunlight, potentially lowering your dependence on grid electricity and reducing your monthly power bills. The scheme aims to enable households to receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month, depending on solar generation and household consumption.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme is intended for eligible residential electricity consumers. General eligibility requirements include:

  • The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
  • The household must have a valid residential electricity connection.
  • The property must have suitable rooftop space for solar installation.
  • The applicant must comply with the scheme’s rules concerning previous solar subsidies.
  • The rooftop solar system must meet the applicable technical and installation requirements.
  • The applicant must complete the prescribed registration, installation, inspection, and subsidy claim procedures.

Final eligibility is determined under the current official scheme guidelines and the relevant electricity distribution utility’s requirements.

Central Financial Assistance is provided by the Government of India under PM Surya Ghar. Any state amount is separate, additional assistance on top of it, and applies only where that state’s own conditions are met.

Puducherry: the amounts shown are reference values and still require confirmation against the current Puducherry Government notification before they are treated as a confirmed benefit.

Tamil Nadu: the amounts match those published on the Tamil Nadu Solar Roof Top Portal (TNGECL / TNEB) when checked on 12 October 2026. As published there, the state amount is released only after installation, net metering, commissioning and release of the central subsidy, and applies to residential rooftop systems up to 10 kW using DCR-compliant, ALMM-listed modules installed by a TEDA-empanelled vendor.

Final subsidy eligibility, applicable amounts and disbursement depend on current scheme guidelines, the applicable state or UT, the electricity distribution utility and official approval.
